The three councillors for the Chiswick Gunnersbury ward, which is in Hounslow borough but adjacent to South Parade in Ealing borough, have contacted Ealing Council urging it to delay non-urgent road works until next year during a holiday period. Cllrs Joanna Biddolph, Ranjit Gill and Ron Mushiso argue that the work being undertaken is not urgent and will cause significant disruption in the run up to Christmas with a possible impact on trade on Chiswick High Road. They have asked Cllrs Katherine Dunne and Guy Lambert to make representations to Ealing on behalf of Hounslow Council. Their email is below. It led to articles in chiswickw4.com and My London's Hounslow Chronicle for which the links are below.
Dear Katherine and Guy,
We, the Chiswick Gunnersbury ward councillors, urge you please to ask your counterparts in Ealing to postpone the roadworks on South Parade, due to have started on Monday 30th October and to last over five weeks, because of their damaging impact on Chiswick's retail and hospitality businesses during what should be their best time of year.
Last week’s work on Acton Lane demonstrated, again, that gridlock is an inevitable consequence of closing a lane or road. With no flexibility in the Chiswick road network since Fishers Lane was closed, traffic on Acton Lane, Chiswick High Road, South Parade and Turnham Green Terrace will be at a standstill. The flow of traffic will be severely affected, even with traffic lights along South Parade.
As one shop owner said last week, “Chiswick used to work. It doesn’t work now.” as he looked out on gridlock.
The roadworks are not urgent and could be done after the Christmas and New Year peak for shopping and dining out. We are also concerned that, as the Ealing letter says, bad weather will prolong the length of time the restrictions are in place, or make them intermittent and unpredictable, which will have an even more damaging effect on Chiswick’s local economy. Delaying the work until January will be appreciated by all Chiswick’s businesses and residents. Better still would be to do the work during spring or summer school holidays when many families go away and traffic is lower.
We have attached the letter delivered to businesses and residents of South Parade explaining the works.
Please act swiftly to ask Ealing to postpone these works and support local businesses and residents throughout Chiswick.
Jo , Ranjit and Ron
